What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is comprised of five components:

Self-Awareness: Recognising your emotions and understanding why you feel that way. It means being aware of how your emotions affect yourself and those around you. It also entails knowing what is important to you- your values or moral compass.

Self-Regulation: The ability to manage your emotions responsibly and hold yourself accountable for any mistakes you make.

Motivation: Having drive to improve and succeed. Being optimistic and resilient in situations.

Empathy: Being able to see a situation from another’s perspective. Being aware of other’s feelings and responding to them in appropriate and sensitive ways.

Social Skills:  Knowing how to communicate effectively. Someone who is a good listener and is able to navigate conflicts in relationships.
